Clos Galena, also known as Domini de la Cartoixa, is celebrating its 25th anniversary since its founding in 1999 by Miguel Pérez and Merche Dalmau in El Molar, Priorat. Since its beginnings, the winery has been committed to social and environmental sustainability, practising organic agriculture certified by the Consell Català de Producció Agrària Ecològica (CCPAE). Its vineyards, which have grown from 11 to almost 30 hectares, are managed without the use of synthetic chemicals, favouring traditional and natural methods for pest control and fertilisation.
In 2002, Clos Galena launched its first red wines, Galena and Clos Galena, both organic and made mainly from red Grenache and Carignan, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. A major milestone was in 2017, when its Formiga de Vellut 2014 wine was selected for the Nobel Prize banquet, being the first Catalan wine to receive such an honour.
To commemorate its 25th anniversary, the winery has created a limited edition: Clos Galena 25 Years of a Dream 2022. This unique wine has been made from grapes selected from five special plots, including Carignan vines around 80 years old, Grenache between 45 and 60 years old, and Syrah around 30 years old, with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon. Production is limited to 1,398 bottles, reflecting the dedication and spirit of improvement that have guided the winery during this quarter of a century.
